Caps & Gowns
The tradition of wearing a cap and gown upon graduation began hundreds of years ago, and it continues today. It’s the
official look that symbolizes all of your accomplishments up to now, and all of your potential for the future. Keep the time-
honored tradition alive with an official school cap and gown from Jostens. Caps & Gowns are most likely required to
participate in the graduation ceremony at your school.
How to wear your cap and gown:
- The cap is worn flat on the head.
- The gown should fall midway between the knee and ankle.
- Tassels are usually worn on the right side and shifted to the left when graduates receive their diplomas.
History of the Cap and Gown
Wearing academic regalia for graduation ceremonies began in England in the 12th and 13th centuries when English
universities first came to be. Robes were the main form of dress from the beginning, and different caps were introduced
thereafter. The square “mortar board” graduation cap as we know it came about in the 16th century.
These traditions were carried overseas to America and were standardized by the Intercollegiate Commission to form a
system of academic apparel. These standards continue today, including the gown cut and style, the “mortar board” cap
being worn horizontally in the center of one’s head (not tipped), and the tassel being fastened in the middle of the cap’s
top to allow the shift from the right to the left side during the ceremony.
